Founded
Sarasota’s history dates back thousands of years, originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Calusa and Timucua. Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, but modern settlement began in the mid-1800s when pioneers and fishing families established small communities along Sarasota Bay. The area grew steadily, especially after the arrival of the railroad in the early 1900s. Sarasota was incorporated as a city in 1913 and gained prominence in the 1920s when John Ringling, of circus fame, made it his winter home and invested heavily in the city’s development and cultural institutions. Today, Sarasota is celebrated for its vibrant arts scene, beautiful beaches, and historical roots.
