Siesta Key

A Barrier Island in Sarasota County, Florida

Siesta Key is an idyllic barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, Florida, known for its dazzling white quartz sand beaches and laid-back tropical atmosphere. It’s a popular destination for beach lovers, families, and snowbirds seeking serene waters, stunning sunsets, and a charming village lifestyle with easy access to Sarasota’s amenities.

Location & Size

Siesta Key is located on the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida, just southwest of the city of Sarasota. The island is approximately 8 miles long and spans about 3.5 square miles.

Founded

Siesta Key’s history dates back to the 1800s when it was originally known as “Sarasota Key” and used by fishermen, farmers, and pioneers. In the early 20th century, it began to develop into a residential and vacation community.

In 1907, a group of visionaries led by Harry Higel and Captain Roberts formed the Siesta Land Company, which was instrumental in surveying and selling lots, building infrastructure, and promoting the island’s potential.

The company began using the name “Siesta,” which means “nap” or “rest” in Spanish, to evoke a peaceful and relaxing image that would appeal to potential buyers and visitors.  The name “Siesta Key” became official around 1912. The construction of bridges in the 1920s connected the island to the mainland, spurring growth and establishing it as a desirable destination for both residents and tourists.
