Founded

Boca Grande was founded in the early 1900s, primarily due to the discovery of phosphate rock on the banks of the Peace River and the development of the Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad. This railroad was crucial in transporting phosphate from mines to the port at Boca Grande Pass.

The town’s development was further spurred by the desire to create a resort on Gasparilla Island and the burgeoning sport fishing industry.

The area gained prominence in the late 19th century with the establishment of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse in 1890, marking its significance as a maritime hub.
