Location & Size

Venice is located in Sarasota County on Florida’s southwest coast, about 20 miles south of Sarasota. The city spans approximately 16 square miles and includes both the mainland and Venice Island, which is separated by the Intracoastal Waterway.

Founded

Venice, Florida was originally settled in the 1860s, with early inhabitants drawn to the fertile land and access to the Gulf of Mexico. The area was first known as Horse and Chaise, named after a carriage-shaped tree formation visible from the sea. In 1888, the name was officially changed to Venice. The city’s most transformative moment came in 1925, when the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a powerful labor union, purchased land to develop a planned city. They hired renowned city planner John Nolen, who designed Venice with Mediterranean-style architecture, orderly streets, and abundant green spaces. This thoughtful planning shaped the Venice we know today—an elegant, walkable city with a strong sense of identity.
