Founded
Weston’s origins trace back to the early 1980s, when the Arvida/JMB Partners development company (known for planning large-scale communities, including Walt Disney World) purchased thousands of acres of land along the western edge of Broward County. Their vision was to build a master-planned community that blended suburban living with natural beauty, incorporating winding lakes, green spaces, and family-oriented neighborhoods.
Construction and development began in the mid-1980s, with carefully designed residential villages, parks, and shopping areas. As the community grew, residents recognized the need for self-governance, and in 1996, Weston was officially incorporated as a city.
From its founding, Weston was designed with a long-term vision of high quality of life, which included strong schools, extensive recreational amenities, and strict aesthetic guidelines through homeowners’ associations. Today, it stands as one of the most successful examples of a master-planned city in Florida, often ranked among the safest and most desirable places to live in the state.
