Founded
Miami’s history is one of the most unique in Florida. The area was originally inhabited by the Tequesta people for thousands of years before European contact. Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, but it remained largely unsettled until the late 1800s.
The city of Miami was officially founded on July 28, 1896, making it one of the youngest major cities in the United States. Its creation is closely tied to Julia Tuttle, a local landowner known as the “Mother of Miami.” She persuaded railroad magnate Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway south to the area by offering him land. With the arrival of the railroad, Miami quickly developed from a small settlement into a thriving city.
Early growth was fueled by tourism, trade, and real estate, setting the stage for Miami to become the vibrant international hub it is today.
Population
Miami is the second-most populous city in Florida with a population of 442,241 at the 2020 census, while the Miami metropolitan area has an estimated 6.46 million residents.
Miami is the third-largest metropolitan area in the Southeast and sixth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.
