Longboat key is located southwest of Bradenton and just northwest of downtown Sarasota and is approximately 11 miles long.
It is a barrier island and is split between two counties: Manatee County to the north and Sarasota County to the south
Longboat Key is accessible by road via the Longboat Pass Bridge from Bradenton Beach to the north and the New Pass Bridge from Lido Key to the south.
Founded
Longboat Key’s history traces back to Native American inhabitants and early European explorers.
The original name for the island was “Sarazota” or “Sarasota Key” used by the Calusa Native Americans. The name was later changed to Longboat Key, likely as a result of early settlers likening the shape of the island to a longboat.
The town was officially incorporated on November 13, 1955 .
