Lido Key, Florida is a picturesque barrier island located off the coast of Sarasota, connected to the mainland by the John Ringling Causeway.   Known for its powdery white sand beaches, tranquil waters, and elegant charm, Lido Key offers a peaceful yet upscale coastal retreat. Location & Size

Lido Key is located just west of downtown Sarasota on southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.

To its north is Longboat Key, to the east are Bird Key and St. Armands Key,  and Siesta Key is to the south.

Lido key is approximately 1.5 square miles.

Founded

Originally inhabited by the Calusa and Paleo peoples for over 4,000 years, Lido Key’s modern development began in the 1920s when circus magnate John Ringling envisioned it as a luxurious resort destination. The key got its name when John Ringling, a fan of Italian culture, referred to its beaches by using the Italian word “lido,” which means “beach.”

The construction of the John Ringling Causeway in 1926 connected the island to Sarasota, facilitating growth. In 1940, the Lido Beach Casino was established as a Works Progress Administration project, becoming a popular social hub until its demolition in 1969.
