Founded

Key Biscayne was originally home to the Tequesta people before Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s. The construction of the Cape Florida Lighthouse in 1825 made the island an important maritime landmark. For decades it was used mainly for coconut plantations until the Rickenbacker Causeway opened in 1947, connecting it to Miami and sparking residential development. The town officially incorporated in 1991, becoming a prestigious island community known for its beaches, parks, and luxury living.
