Location & Size

Hollywood is located on Florida’s southeastern coast in Broward County, between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. The city covers about 30.8 square miles.

Founded

Hollywood, Florida was founded in 1925 by visionary developer Joseph W. Young, who dreamed of creating a “dream city” that combined the glamour and allure of California’s Hollywood with the tropical beauty of South Florida. Young purchased thousands of acres of land between Miami and Fort Lauderdale in the early 1920s and began an ambitious city plan featuring broad boulevards, a yacht basin, parks, golf courses, and luxury hotels. The city was officially incorporated in November 1925, but shortly afterward, the devastating 1926 Miami hurricane and the end of the Florida land boom slowed its early growth. Despite these setbacks, Hollywood rebounded over the decades, evolving from a planned resort community into a thriving, diverse coastal city that still reflects elements of Young’s original vision.
