Founded

Punta Gorda was founded in 1884 when a Kentucky businessman, Isaac Trabue, purchased land along the southern shore of Charlotte Harbor with hopes of developing a thriving port town. Originally named “Trabue,” the town was later renamed Punta Gorda, meaning “Fat Point” in Spanish, referencing the shape of the land jutting into the harbor.

The arrival of the Florida Southern Railroad in 1886 marked a turning point, bringing increased trade, tourism, and growth to the area. Punta Gorda was officially incorporated as a city in 1887, becoming the first incorporated municipality in what is now Charlotte County.

Throughout the 20th century, Punta Gorda evolved from a fishing village into a charming small city known for its historic homes, vibrant downtown, and beautiful harborfront. Despite major setbacks from hurricanes—especially Hurricane Charley in 2004—the city has consistently rebuilt with resilience, blending its rich history with modern coastal living.
