Founded

Originally developed in the 1950s by the General Development Corporation as part of the Port Charlotte area, North Port was incorporated as “North Port Charlotte” in 1959. In 1974, residents voted to rename it “North Port” to establish its own identity. The area is also home to Little Salt Spring, an archaeological site with evidence of prehistoric human activity.
