Founded

The area now known as Nokomis was originally inhabited by Native American tribes.

Nokomis does not have a single official founding date like some incorporated cities, as it is an unincorporated community. However, its development began in the late 1800s. Settlers arrived in the area in the 1880s and 1890s, and the name “Nokomis” was officially adopted in the early 20th century.

A key historic milestone was the construction of the Nokomis School in 1924 on Nippino Trail, one of the first major public buildings in the area, which helped establish the community’s identity. While Nokomis has remained unincorporated, its growth and development closely parallel those of nearby Venice and Sarasota.
