Clewiston is situated in southwest Florida, on the south bank of Lake Okeechobee, and approximately 80 miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
The city covers an area of about 4.5 square miles.
Founded
Clewiston was founded in the 1920s as a planned community for workers in the sugar industry. The city was named after Alonzo Clewis, a prominent businessman who was instrumental in the development of the sugar industry in the area. It was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1931.
