Location & Size

Surfside is located on a barrier island in northeastern Miami-Dade County.

The town is bordered on the south by the Miami Beach, on the north by Bal Harbour, on the west by Biscayne Bay, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. It also serves as part of the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida.

It spans approximately 0.56 square miles.

Founded

Surfside’s story began during the land boom of the 1920s, when Miami’s barrier islands started transforming from mangrove and sand dunes into seaside communities. Developers saw potential in the narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, and by the early 1930s, small hotels, cottages, and businesses began to appear.

In 1935, a group of 35 local residents gathered to formally incorporate Surfside as a town, creating a close-knit oceanfront community with its own identity. From its earliest days, Surfside was envisioned as a family-oriented beach town, in contrast to the bustling nightlife of nearby Miami Beach.

Over the decades, Surfside grew steadily, maintaining its charm with a mix of single-family homes, boutique hotels, and local shops. Its strong zoning regulations preserved a low-rise, neighborly feel, even as surrounding areas shifted toward high-rise luxury developments. Today, Surfside is both a residential haven and a welcoming beach destination, still rooted in the community spirit of its founding years.
