Founded

Palm Beach traces its roots back to the 1870s, when pioneers and Bahamian settlers established homesteads along Lake Worth. The area was first known as “Lake Worth,” but in 1878, a shipwreck called the Providencia ran aground nearby, carrying a cargo of coconuts. Locals planted the salvaged coconuts, leading to the lush groves of palm trees that inspired the name Palm Beach.

The town began to develop in the late 19th century when Henry Flagler, a Standard Oil magnate, extended his Florida East Coast Railway to the region in the 1890s. Flagler built grand resorts, including the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers, transforming Palm Beach into an exclusive winter retreat for wealthy northerners.

Palm Beach was officially incorporated on April 17, 1911, solidifying its identity as a luxurious resort community. Today, it remains one of the most prestigious and affluent towns in the United States, retaining the elegance and exclusivity that defined its founding.
