Location & Size

Miami Beach is  located directly east of the city of Miami, on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, on the coast of southeast  Florida.

Miami Beach is part of the greater Miami metropolitan area, and covers about 15 square miles.

Founded

The development of Miami Beach began in the late 1800s, when the island was little more than a mangrove swamp and barrier sand dune. Originally owned by the Lum family, the land was purchased in 1870 but remained largely undeveloped for years. In the early 1900s, entrepreneurs such as Carl Fisher, John S. Collins, and the Lummus brothers recognized its potential as a resort destination. John S. Collins built a wooden bridge across Biscayne Bay in 1913, connecting Miami to the island, while Carl Fisher invested heavily in draining the swampland and creating infrastructure. By 1915, the area was incorporated as the Town of Miami Beach, later becoming a city in 1917. With the construction of luxury hotels, casinos, and glamorous attractions during the 1920s, Miami Beach quickly gained fame as a premier vacation spot, a reputation it continues to hold today.
