Location & Size

Jupiter is located in northern Palm Beach County, along southeast Florida’s Atlantic coast, about 90 miles north of Miami.

The town covers roughly 23 square miles.

Founded

The history of Jupiter dates back thousands of years, with Native American tribes such as the Jaega and later the Seminole inhabiting the region due to its abundant waterways and rich natural resources. European contact began in the 1500s when Spanish explorers sailed along Florida’s coast. The name Jupiter itself originated from a misunderstanding—Spanish settlers referred to the local tribe as Jobe (pronounced Ho-bay), which English mapmakers misinterpreted as “Jove,” the Roman god Jupiter, and the name remained.

The most significant early development was the construction of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse in 1860, which became both a navigational aid and a symbol of the community. Settlement grew slowly through the late 19th century, centered around fishing, farming, and trade along the Loxahatchee River. By the early 20th century, as railroads expanded and coastal communities grew, Jupiter evolved into a small but thriving town. It was officially incorporated in 1925.
