Location & Size

Deerfield Beach is located in northern Broward County along southeast Florida’s Atlantic coast, just south of Boca Raton and north of Pompano Beach. The city covers about 16.3 square miles.

Founded

Deerfield Beach began in the late 19th century as a small agricultural settlement along the Hillsboro River, named for the herds of deer that roamed the area. Early settlers were primarily farmers, growing pineapples, tomatoes, and other crops, with the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1896 spurring growth and trade.

In 1925, the community was incorporated as the Town of Deerfield. As tourism began to shape Florida’s economy in the 1930s, residents sought to highlight the area’s coastal attractions, leading to the name change to “Deerfield Beach” in 1939. Over the decades, the city evolved from a farming village into a thriving seaside destination, known for its clean beaches, fishing pier, and family-friendly atmosphere, while still preserving elements of its small-town charm.
