Location & Size

Boynton Beach is located on Florida’s southeast coast, about halfway between West Palm Beach and Boca Raton. The city covers approximately 16.5 square miles.

Founded

Boynton Beach was founded in 1895 by Major Nathan S. Boynton, a Civil War veteran from Michigan who was drawn to the area’s warm climate and natural beauty. He built the Boynton Hotel along the oceanfront, attracting seasonal visitors seeking a tropical escape. Early settlers, many of whom were farmers, established pineapple plantations and other crops, taking advantage of the fertile soil and year-round growing season. The Florida East Coast Railway, completed by Henry Flagler, helped connect the area to the rest of the state and spurred development. Originally known as the Town of Boynton, it was officially incorporated in 1920. In 1941, the oceanfront area split off and was briefly called Boynton Beach, but later merged back with the main community, adopting the name “Boynton Beach” citywide in 1949. Over the decades, the city evolved from a quiet farming village into a vibrant, coastal destination with a growing population, cultural scene, and strong ties to its historical roots.
