Bartow is located in central Polk County in the heart of Central Florida.

The city covers about 6.5 square miles and sits roughly 45 miles east of Tampa and 55 miles southwest of Orlando.

Nearby communities include Winter Haven (about 12 miles north), Lakeland (about 20 miles northwest), and Lake Wales (about 15 miles east).

Founded

 Bartow began as Fort Blount in 1851, a frontier outpost, and officially incorporated in 1882.   The city was named after Francis S. Bartow, the first Confederate brigade commander killed in the Civil War, reflecting the era in which it developed.

Its selection as Polk County’s seat helped shape Bartow’s identity, leading to the construction of courthouses, government buildings, and legal offices that still define the city today. Throughout its history, Bartow has weathered economic shifts, freezes, and storms while maintaining its role as an administrative and cultural anchor for the region. Preservation of historic buildings remains an important part of the city’s identity.
