Location & Size

Titusville is a coastal city in Brevard County on the central east coast of Florida’s Space Coast, positioned between the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.

Titusville is located along the Indian River, west of Merritt Island and the Kennedy Space Center, approximately 50 miles southeast of Orlando.

The city covers approximately 29.2 square miles.

Founded

Titusville was founded in 1867 by Colonel Henry Theodore Titus, a Confederate veteran and entrepreneur who arrived in the area then known as Sand Point. Titus established a hotel, trading post, and post office, helping the settlement grow into a small riverfront community along the Indian River.

In 1873, Titus officially laid out the town and named it Titusville after himself. The community prospered as a hub for citrus shipping and river trade, particularly once steamboat and later railroad connections improved access to the area.

Titusville gained further importance in the 20th century when it became the gateway to Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, transforming from a quiet riverside town into the “Gateway to Space.” Today, its rich history blends pioneering roots with its central role in America’s space exploration heritage.
