Founded
Before the mid-20th century, the area that is now Port St. Lucie was mostly undeveloped wilderness—home to pine flatwoods, marshlands, and scattered ranches. The St. Lucie River served as a natural landmark, but few settlers lived in the region due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure.
The transformation began in the 1950s, when the General Development Corporation (GDC) purchased vast tracts of land along the river with plans to create an affordable, master-planned community. The first bridge across the St. Lucie River was completed in 1959, connecting the once-isolated area to U.S. Highway 1 and spurring development.
By 1961, enough homes, roads, and amenities had been built for Port St. Lucie to become officially incorporated as a city. Early residents were drawn by low land prices, a tropical climate, and GDC’s vision of a suburban paradise with modern conveniences.
Through the decades, Port St. Lucie grew steadily, especially during the housing booms of the 1980s and early 2000s. Today, it stands as one of Florida’s fastest-growing cities, evolving from a quiet development project into a thriving community known for its livability, family-friendly atmosphere, and balance of nature and progress.
