Location & Size

Palm Bay is located in Brevard County, on Florida’s central east coast, also known as the Space Coast.  It is located about 4 miles south of Melbourne and 17 miles north of Sebastian.

Founded

Palm Bay’s history traces back to the late 1800s, when settlers were drawn to the fertile lands along Turkey Creek. Originally known as Tillman, after early settler John Tillman who built a wharf and trading post in the 1870s, the small community grew as farmers cultivated oranges, bananas, and other crops.

The arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1894 boosted trade and transportation, helping the settlement flourish. In 1925, the town was renamed Palm Bay to reflect its lush tropical landscape and location on the bay of the Indian River Lagoon. Following World War II, the area saw significant growth as new residents and industries moved in, especially with the rise of nearby aerospace and space exploration at Cape Canaveral.

Palm Bay officially incorporated as a city in 1960 and has since developed into Brevard County’s largest city, blending its natural heritage with modern innovation and community living.
