DeLand is situated in central east Florida, about 25 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, and about 30 miles west of Daytona Beach.

The city covers approximately 16.5 square miles.

Founded

DeLand was founded in 1876 by Henry Addison DeLand, a wealthy philanthropist and citrus grower from New York. Inspired by the fertile land and warm climate of central Florida, DeLand purchased property along the St. Johns River with the vision of creating a prosperous community. He built a hotel and established a town that he hoped would become a cultural and educational center.

In 1883, DeLand donated land and funds to establish Stetson University, helping cement the city’s reputation as a hub of learning and culture. The city was officially incorporated in 1882, and over time, DeLand became known for its historic downtown, tree-lined streets, and rich heritage. Today, it proudly preserves its identity as the “Athens of Florida,” blending its small-town charm with a legacy of education and community spirit.
