Location & Size
Lake Worth Beach, Florida is located in Palm Beach County along the southeastern coast of Florida. It sits directly on the Atlantic Ocean and borders the Lake Worth Lagoon, just south of West Palm Beach and north of Boynton Beach.
The city is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach metropolitan area, making it a central spot in South Florida’s vibrant coastal region.
Founded
The area that became Lake Worth was originally inhabited by the Jaega and Seminole tribes before the arrival of settlers. In the late 19th century, pioneers began moving south into what is now Palm Beach County, drawn by the fertile land along the Lake Worth Lagoon. The community took shape after Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway extended into the area in the early 1900s, opening access to trade, travel, and development.
In 1912, the city of Lake Worth was officially incorporated. Early settlers established farms and citrus groves, and the community became a hub for agriculture. The naming of the city honored General William J. Worth, a U.S. Army officer during the Second Seminole War. As the city grew, its coastal location made it attractive for both residents and visitors, eventually shifting from farming to tourism, arts, and cultural life.
