Founded

Jensen Beach traces its roots back to the late 1800s, when settlers were drawn to the fertile land and the mild coastal climate. The community was named after John Laurence Jensen, an immigrant from Denmark who arrived in the area in the 1880s. Jensen established one of the first pineapple plantations, and his success encouraged other growers to settle in the region. By the early 1900s, Jensen Beach had become one of the largest exporters of pineapples in the world, earning it the nickname “The Pineapple Capital of the World.”

The pineapple industry thrived until the early 20th century, when a combination of crop diseases, freezes, and competition from Cuban growers brought the boom to an end. Despite this, the town adapted, shifting its focus to fishing, boating, and tourism, which remain central to its identity today. Jensen Beach still celebrates its agricultural past each year with the Pineapple Festival, keeping alive the spirit of its founding industry while embracing its modern coastal charm.
