Location & Size

Hobe Sound is located in Martin County on Florida’s southeast coast,

between Stuart to the north and Jupiter to the south.

It spans roughly 5.7 square miles.

Founded

Hobe Sound’s history stretches back thousands of years to when the Jaega people inhabited the area, thriving on its coastal resources. European contact began in the 1500s, and local legend ties its name to a Spanish pronunciation of “Jove,” referencing nearby Jupiter Inlet. In the late 19th century, pioneers and settlers arrived, drawn by the fertile land, fishing, and timber resources. The community began to take shape with the arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in the early 1900s, which connected it to other parts of Florida and encouraged development. While Hobe Sound never became a bustling tourist hub like some nearby towns, its early growth centered on agriculture, fishing, and its role as a quiet stop along the rail line. Over time, it evolved into a tranquil residential and nature-focused community, maintaining much of the unspoiled beauty that first drew settlers to the area.
